It’s Almost Party Time!

Starkville is turning 175 and we’re throwing a Birthday Party Friday afternoon! Take a look at some of the preparations and how some of our Downtown retailers are celebrating! Make sure to stop by the Greater Starkville Development Partnership Welcome Center tomorrow, 4:00-6:00pm for a fun time for the whole family. We’ll celebrate with cake, refreshments and a wacky photo booth. Bill Thurlow will be providing party tunes and there will be plenty of fun for the kids like balloon animals, face painting & more.

Historic StarkVegas Run this Saturday

Runners are in for a special treat this weekend in Mississippi’s College Town! The Starkville Central Neighborhood Foundation presents the Historic StarkVegas 10K/5K Run on Saturday, March 24. You’ll enjoy a chip-timed race through the historic neighborhoods of Starkville on either a 5K or 10K route. There will also be a Family Fun Run and Dog Walk (or is it Dawg Walk?).

The race begins at the Greensboro Center at 401 Greensboro Street in the heart of Starkville. Registration begins at 7am with an 8am start time. Registration fees are $30/10K, $25/5K, $10/Family Fun Run & Dog Walk.

We caught up with the lovely ladies of Main Street member, Deep South Pout to find out their TOP TEN tips for exuding fashionista cuteness whether you’re staying home or off to parts unknown. DEEP SOUTH POUT’S Top Ten Trends for Spring Break Style:

Bright Fun colors! Bright in-your-face colors are everywhere this spring! Colored skinny jeans–this is all the rage this spring/summer; if you don’t have a pair, you’ll regret it everyday!
Color Blocking! For those of you who haven’t jumped on the color-blocking wagon yet…it’s a confident way to pair together solid bright colors without mixing patterns! Don’t forget how easy color-blocking is with our FAB seamless wear!! You can take a plain yellow top and add a pop of orange under it with our fun bright seamless!
Neutral flats or wedges! With all these bright colors and color-blocking trends you MUST grab a pair for neutral wedges or flats! Must Must Must!
White is here… yep.. even before Easter! I know, I know…you southern women are freaking out at the thought of breaking out the white skinnies before “time”! That rule is long gone! Grab those white skinnies and bright fun wedges or flats and hit the town!
Have fun with layering! Wether you are taking a dress thats a little too short and pairing ‘em with a fun skinny jean, or you love to layer colorful seamless with a fab pattern! Layering is a MUST!
Romantic prints and trends! Be on the look out for more ruffles, pleats and lace!! The soft romantic ruffle look is everywhere this spring! Whether it’s a top with lace with a floral pattern or a soft pleated top! The soft and sweet look is huge this season!
Bold graphics!! We are more than obsessed with chevron prints this season! Look for attention-getting geometric prints!! If you haven’t grabbed a chevron print dress or top yet…just walk down Main Street, you’ll find ‘em!
Our favorite trend without a doubt is the Urban Boho trend! The Urban Boho trend is so fun! Mixing a hippie chic and gypsy boho clothing and jewelry for a fun carefree, less-than-polished everyday look! Whether it’s a Blu Gertrude headband or vintage key necklace, Urban Boho is here to stay!
Be on the look out for bold pastels! If you aren’t in love with the bright in-your-face color trends, you can still color block with pastels! Think Tiffany-blue skinnies and a daffodil top! They are soon to be everywhere! Polish off your look with pastel nail color–whether soft yellow, lavender, or cotton candy pink–you’ll definitely be on trend!
Lastly, hi-gloss/sleek metallics add carefree luxe to any outfit. Dress up your white skinnies with a chic shimmery top and a must-have patterned clutch. Finish off the look by layering your fav dainty necklaces and bangles.

Twitter Town Hall on February 27

This past Monday evening, a crazy thing happened on Twitter. We responded to a comment in our follower stream about improving Starkville. What ensued was a round robin barrage of comments and mentions highlighting both the wonderful aspects of Starkville and the areas where improvement is needed. We enjoyed an impromptu opportunity to hear from folks with strong connections and passions about Mississippi’s College Town AND an opportunity to share our story of Starkville moving forward. We realized this venue could be a very constructive way to listen to the concerns of those Starkville stakeholders who may be under-heard. So, we decided to do it again with intention! You will not want to miss this, folks!

The Starkville Convention and Visitors Bureau and Starkville Main Street will host a TWITTER TOWN HALL meeting on Monday, February 27, 8:00-10:00pm using the Twitter hashtag #Starkville2012. We see this as a great opportunity to hear from students, faculty, residents, business owners, MSU alumni, fans, and visitors to the area about what you feel YOUR college town should be. The floor will be open to any relevant topics and dialog that arise in our efforts to share constructive ideas for continuing to build the best Starkville.

HOW WILL IT WORK?
We will moderate the discussion through our twitter account (@mscollegetown) with initial targeted discussion topics or questions. Anyone interested in participating in the dialog can simply add the #Starkville2012 hashtag to his or her tweet (including the # sign). Tweeters can view the #Starkville2012 stream through any Twitter application by clicking on the hashtag when it appears in a tweet. Users are invited to post, reply or re-tweet at their discretion. We are also inviting several community and campus leaders to participate in the Twitter Town Hall to listen, share ideas and answer specific questions.

A tweeting tool that might help…
To view ONLY the #Starkville2012 Town Hall tweets in real time, participants may want to try a service like tweetchat.com. After navigating to this site in a browser, users can simply login using their Twitter account information and type “Starkville2012″ into the hashtag box. The #Starkville2012 stream will appear. Any tweets posted through tweetchat.com will automatically include the hashtag. You can even visit there NOW to see comments and announcements we’re making about Twitter Town Hall.

We are very excited to facilitate this unique opportunity for dialog. Mississippi’s College Town is YOUR college town, and we want to hear your voice!
