Bright Sounds of Summer with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra

By Mississippi's College Town · Comments (0)
Monday, June 18th, 2012

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear more world-class music in Downtown Starkville — this time a lunchtime chamber concert! While docked in Columbus for a performance on their 2012 tour, the American Wind Symphony Orchestra will perform a chamber concert at the Central Station Grill at 12:00 p.m. on June 21 for the Starkville community.

The American Wind Symphony Orchestra (AWSO) is an American musical ensemble comprising many of the wind instruments found in a symphony orchestra, which is dedicated to the performance of contemporary classical music, and which is known for having commissioned over 400 new works. Based in Mars, Pennsylvania (just north of Pittsburgh), the AWSO was founded and directed by the American conductor (and former trumpeter) Robert Austin Boudreau.

The group, whose membership changes from year to year, typically comprises young professional musicians. The group performs annually during the summer months on a floating arts center designed by the American architect Louis Kahn. Point Counterpoint II, constructed in 1976, is the second boat used by the orchestra, the first having been being a converted coal barge named Point Counterpoint. Aboard Point Counterpoint II, which measures 195 feet long and 38 feet wide, there are also rooms for up to 13 crewmembers, staff, and the Boudreaus to live, an art gallery below deck, and a small theater where most of the patrons’ concerts take place.

Each summer, the group performs on the barge’s stage, with the barge anchored in one of Pittsburgh’s rivers. The group also travels on the barge, around various waterways of the United States (including the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, as well as their tributaries), giving concerts along the way.

The 2012 tour will begin in mid-June as the vessel and its troubadours present to citizens of Columbus, Mississippi on June 23. The orchestra will then entertain thousands as they traverse the Tombigbee Waterway, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, and then enter the Ohio and progress upriver to its homeport of Pittsburgh, where a homecoming celebration of the orchestra’s 55th anniversary will include a Cuban music and arts festival, as well as a conductors and composers symposium.

The chamber concert is presented by the Central Station Grill, Starkville Area Arts Council, and the Starkville Main Street Association. There is no admission to the concert, and seating is limited, so concertgoers are encouraged to make reservations with the Central Station Grill. Annual Art in the Garden This Saturday

By Mississippi's College Town · Comments (0)
Thursday, May 17th, 2012

The Starkville Area Arts Council presents ART IN THE GARDEN, its annual Spring garden tour, this Saturday, 9am to 1pm with an included breakfast at Hilton Garden Inn beginning at 8am. Tickets are $15 each and are available for purchase at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership office and East Mississippi Lumber Company on Russell Street. They may also be purchased at Hilton Garden Inn on the morning of the event.

As part of our DOG DAYS OF SUMMER series, the event features six gardens are on display including five area residences and the terrace at the Hilton Garden Inn. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Spring gardens in full bloom while also experiencing the work of local artists on location conducting their crafts in music, dance and painting. This unique combination of garden arts and fine arts is a real treat!

Emily Jones, 2012 Art in the Garden chairperson, shared her thoughts on the event: ”We are encouraging participants to come join us at the Hilton at 8 a.m., have some breakfast, then perhaps carpool to some of the gardens. The garden owners have been working for months to make their spaces picture perfect.  This is an excellent opportunity to get new ideas and consult with Master Gardeners who will be in each garden to answer questions.”

The gardens on tour include:

Stephanie Doane and Gary Bradshaw garden at 976 West Briar Lake Drive
Don and Danya O’Bannon garden at 623 South Wedgewood Road
Guy and Nancy Hargrove garden at 115 Grand Ridge Road
P.C. and Barbara McLaurin garden at 505 Lincoln Green Street
Jimmy and Ginger Carver garden at 309 Green Street
Terrace garden at the Hilton Garden Inn.

A map to the gardens is available at the Starkville Area Arts Council website and will also be available at Hilton Garden Inn the morning of the event. We hope you’ll come out and enjoy Springtime in Starkville!

Starkville is pleased to welcome Second Samuel playwright Pamela Parker for the Thursday and Friday productions and two very special events…

Thursday, April 19 – Opening Night Reception Honoring playwright Pamela Parker
Join us for our opening night performance and a reception honoring playwright Pamela Parker immediately following the show. Sponsored by the Starkville Area Arts Council.

Friday, April, 20 – Talk Back with Second Samuel playwright Pamela Parker
Join us for the Friday night performance and stay for an informal talk-back session with playwright Pamela Parker and the cast of Second Samuel.

A preview of the production…
“There was a time not so long ago when things was different than they are now days. Not better, just different…” That time was the late 1940s, and in a sleepy little town called Second Samuel what had been called the Great Depression was quickly fading into memory. The war had been won, the election was now over, and “Give ‘em Hell Harry” was still president. It had been an exciting time for sure, but the folks in Second Samuel were ready for things to settle down and get back to normal. Except—this was the summer Miss Gertrude passed away, and deep dark secrets were about to be revealed. Nobody could have imagined how the death of one sweet little old lady would turn the entire town upside down, leaving everybody in Second Samuel wondering if anything would ever be normal again!
