Our Visit with MSU Softball, Part 1

By Mississippi's College Town · Comments (0)
Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Did you know that all home MSU Softball games are free? They are! When we heard from the coach that the players considered themselves to be “Starkville’s Team,” we couldn’t resist investigating a little further — especially since we’re always looking for fun things to do during Spring.  SO, we took some time to visit one of the Bulldog Softball open practices at the end of January. Kyle Nibblett with MSU Athletics was kind enough to give us a tour of the softball facilities and talk a little about the excitement surrounding MSU Softball these days.

During softball season, most home games are played 60-90 minutes prior to MSU Baseball games. Admission is free for Softball, so it’s a fantastic opportunity to add family fun to a great Bulldog weekend. Coach Vann Stuedeman is in her first season at MSU, and “VANNtastic!” is prepping the team for some stiff competition in one of the toughest schedules in the country.

This year, the team has some special things planned for home games including fun activities and prizes in “Right Field Lounge,” a guest first pitch at every game, and opportunities for area girls in uniform to join the team on field for the national anthem. During the SAVOR OUR SOUTH Super Bulldog Weekend, MSU Softball will play top-ranked Kentucky AND host the first ever Alumni Game featuring former All-Americans and Olympians. Yep, there’s LOTS to celebrate about MSU Softball this year! We’ll share our interview with Coach “VANNtastic”  in Part 2 of our visit. Meanwhile…

6 Things You May Not Know About MSU Softball:

1. The team and coaches unwind with a maroon pool table! When we saw it, it was covered with the official NCAA softballs for the year!

2. The 2012 MSU Softball team is the only one in the country to have TWO sets of sisters on its roster. Can you name them?

3. The team takes batting practice with a new volunteer coach who just happens to be an All-American as well.

4. MSU Athletics will break ground on a major stadium expansion after the close of the 2013 season.

5. MSU will host the 3-day softball SEC Tournament for the first time in 2014.

6. There are 5 top 15 teams coming to Starkville this year to play MSU!

We hope you’ll add MSU Softball to your list of fun things to do this Spring. The first home series this year begins on Friday, Feb 17! Check out the full 2012 Schedule and make your plans to cheer on the Bulldogs!

Christmas Dinner Goodness from a Bulldog Favorite

By Mississippi's College Town · Comments (0)
Monday, December 19th, 2011

Christmas is almost here, and in the South the combination of great food and great football go hand in hand! We recently caught up with one of Mississippi State’s football greats to find out what he’s been up to and to learn how he’s sharing his love of family cooking with fans everywhere.

Former MSU Tight End REGGIE KELLY is no stranger to our area or to MSU football fans. He grew up in Aberdeen, MS and had a stellar career as a Bulldog. He continued his football career with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Atlanta Falcons, where he plays now. Even though he is obviously pretty busy during this time of year, he still finds time to get back to Mississippi. He is very active in charity work in Aberdeen through the United Way of Monroe County, providing holiday hams and turkeys to local elderly, and just last week he hosted his high school’s team and coaches as the Falcons played the Jacksonville Jaguars. On trips home, he also manages to pop over to Starkville, his Bulldog home away from home as well!

What you may not know is that Reggie also has a signature line of sauces, seasonings and salsas he markets across the nation, and we hear he’s a pretty good cook too! The KYVAN line of food products is Reggie’s way of sharing the Southern cooking tradition with others! Check out what Reggie had to say about his time in Starkville and his savory cooking…

1. Tell us some of your favorite memories about your time in Starkville.
“The basketball team went to the Final Four during my Freshman year. The students went crazy!”

2. We know you get back to the area and your hometown of Aberdeen as often as you can. What are the favorite stops you like to make in Starkville when you travel to Mississippi?
“I love to stop by the campus, see the football team and give them an encouraging word. I also don’t miss a chance to visit Mugshots and Bop’s!”

3. Great food is such a huge part of growing up in the South. Tell us the story of how you began your KYVAN line of salsas, seasonings and sauces. And, where did you get the name?
“KYVAN is derived by combining my two kids’ names (KYla and KaVAN). My wife and I came up with the idea to go into the food business because we grew up around family who could cook and loved cooking. We wanted to take some of our personal home ingredients and sell them to the consumers so they could appreciate the goodness of great food. Since I was a boy, cooking in my household was an event in itself. I wanted to share that same experience.”

4. What’s your most popular product?
“The Mild Salsa, for sure. Try it!”

5. You know it’s always tailgating season in Bulldog Country. Do you have a favorite tailgating recipe or something for the holiday table using one of the KYVAN products?
“We always do a steak recipe where we marinate the steak in KYVAN overnight and then cook it. Easy and delicious, and steak is always a crowd-pleaser.”

6. Where can folks in Starkville get KYVAN locally or online?
“In Starkville, KYVAN is available at Barnes & Noble on campus, Campus Book Mart, The Lodge and Piggly Wiggly. You can also purchase online at www.reggiekelly82.com“

7. Ok. Who do you pick to win the Music City Bowl this year?
“No brainer!” MSU Bulldogs! #MAROON4LIFE”

Well, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. It was a pleasure to visit with Reggie — one of the Bulldogs who continues to make us proud.  Stop by one of the locations listed above and pick up some KYVAN for your holiday table this year!

Meet Starkville’s Jolly Ol’ Elf

By Mississippi's College Town · Comments (0)
Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and Starkville has enjoyed the familiar face of it’s own “jolly ol’ elf” for many years. You’ve probably seen him make an appearance at the annual Christmas Parade or around town during holiday events. In fact, you may have done a double-take walking across campus! “Was that Santa Claus?” The short answer: YES! With the kick-off of the Christmas season coming up this weekend, we thought you might want to meet the man in the red suit!

Our Santa Claus is Mike Goree, a Starkville resident and instructor at Mississippi State. He has “played” Santa for over 23 years. We sat down with him to find out the inside scoop on standing in for St. Nick.

So, what’s Santa’s day job?
“Well, I guess it’s fitting. I teach Retail Marketing at Mississippi State. I’ve been a full-time instructor here for 11 years.”

Where does Santa keep his suit in the off-season?
“Santa has TWO suits that stay in the closet until they’re called into duty. There is also a Santa Travel Kit. It contains the boots, belt and glasses!”

What is the craziest thing a child has ever requested from you as Santa?
“Oh, there are tons of crazy things. One of the craziest was when two kids asked for machetes. I’m sure their parents would have been thrilled with that! Another time, some children asked for skeleton suits.”

Confession time: Who is Santa’s favorite reindeer?
”Ho! Ho! Ho! There is no favorite! That’s like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. You just can’t!”

What distinguishes you from the “real” jolly ol’ elf and what’s your favorite part about representing Santa?
“I think the glasses distinguish me! And, the biggest joy of being Santa Claus is the magic it brings. You see kids’ eyes light up when they see Santa Claus. It converts them. It is absolutely remarkable — the wonder and awe behind being Santa! The ‘spirit of Santa Claus’ is real. I treat it with goodness, generosity and kindness.”

You can see Starkville’s Santa, Mike Goree, and his signature white beard riding around town in his little red truck (of course). And, this Sunday, Nov 6, you’ll find him at the GSDP office on Main Street for Cookies with Santa!

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas!

By Mississippi's College Town · Comments (0)
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Downtown Starkville is decking the halls! If you were on Main Street last week, you may have seen Starkville Electric Department trucks hanging around a few light poles. The SED was gracious enough to offer in-kind services this Christmas season to ensure Main Street is properly lighted for the holidays, and that included installing our new Christmas wreaths and garland!

We received a lot of feedback on our Facebook page for the type of lights the community wanted for Main Street this year, and we were able to purchase these lighted wreaths and garland through funds from the Starkville Convention & Visitors Bureau, Starkville Main Street and several civic organizations. Along with lights along the Downtown building facades, we can’t wait to enjoy the traditional Southern holiday atmosphere they provide.

The wreaths and garland will be lighted for Christmas Open House on this Sunday, November 6th as we kick-off our “Christmas in Candyland” theme for the holiday season. The event will culminate the New South Weekend Homecoming festivities. Thanks for the hard work, Starkville Electric!

Locally Grown Mums on the way to Pumpkinpalooza!

By Mississippi's College Town · Comments (0)
Friday, October 14th, 2011

Well, we’ve spent the morning hand-picking the mums we’ll be using for display and sale at the Pumpkinpalooza Pumpkin Patch tonight in Downtown Starkville. We introduced you earlier this week to Lancaster Farms, the family farm providing our pumpkins. Well, the mums available at Pumpkinpalooza are grown locally by Busy Bee Farms in Brooksville, MS, just a few miles South of Oktibbeha County.

Busy Bee tells us that they plant their mums in June to achieve the most spectacular look by the Fall season. This year they planted 12,000 mums! Wow! We are so proud to be able to showcase them at Pumpkinpalooza. The “Beth,” “Erica,” and “Foxy Marjorie” varieties will be available in the pumpkin patch for just $5 each, with the Lancaster Farms pumpkins ranging from $2 to $10 each. There’s no better (or more economical) way to outfit your home for the Harvest season. And all locally grown!

Be sure to visit Pumpkinpalooza tonight on Main Street from 6 – 8pm and stop by the Pumpkin Patch for pics and a purchase from the locally grown harvest!
